I was charged on my December bill. I think they might be using information from Facebook, because I was signed up under an email I use only there, in addition to them having my nickname and not my legal first name (and I would never use my nickname when purchasing something that I needed to be billed for).
January 29th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
I agree with the person above about the Facebook info, My parents (I’m a 21 year old college student) were charged for December and January of 2009 for this MyEmailDefender service and it was supposedly authorized by me and they also used my nickname and not my full first name. Although my Dad and I contacted the company and Verizon and they fixed it, but the email address that was given to authorize it was not mine at all. As far as I know, nothing else has been opened in my name after putting a fraud alert on my credit and contacting the Federal Trade Commission for suspected ID theft.
My bank accounts haven’t been touched. My parents just found this out on our HOME telephone bill on 2/2/2009.
FYI:The only thing they need to open an account on their site is your phone number, name, any DOB that is 18 and over, address, and to click a little box that says you are authorized to do this.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
I too was charged . $13.82 Starting on Feb 2nd.
We do not down load anything or even buy anything online. This company billed my telephone bill. I will call them this morning. If I am not satisfied with their response. I will flood the internet with warnings. This should never happen.
March 16th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
My parents were also charged…funny thing is they do not even own a computer…
March 23rd, 2009 at 5:57 am
Agree with all the above. My defender.com show up on phone bill last month with no information of who the were. The same charge again on phone bill this month. I checked the Better Business Bureau and mydefender does not exsist. How about starting a class action suit for fraudulent charges?
I know how to get it started.
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Same thing happened to me. I reported them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center which works with the FBI. I suggest everyone that has been victimized by them do the same. I am furious about this
July 8th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
How do I get this off my bill?
July 8th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Eric, I emailed them, and also called my phone company who put a block on them.
July 9th, 2009 at 12:18 am
I did not order MyEmailDefender but was charged $14.65 for it. I spoke to 10 reps at the company and they said I need to get an “LOA” before removing the charge from my bill. They said it takes 7-10 or 10-14 days to get this LOA. I began complaints in June and have received no LOA via email or fax.
July 17th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Please turn them into the Better Business Bureau and also to the internet crime center here: http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
The have been getting away with it for who knows how long, and it’s time to stop them and get our money back!
July 20th, 2009 at 4:29 am
I had never heard of EmailDefenders until their charges appeared on my phone bill 13.41 for “Mail” plus .41 for “Bill Fee”. I wonder if this is an organized crime scam or part of the Obama administrations latest stimulus scheme.
July 28th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
I just rec’d my July AT&T bill. On that bill is a charge for 13.82 from “myemaildefender” which I would not have ever signed up for. They canceled my account, but refused to refund the money. This is not the first company to do this. I’ve been trying to get a credit from “ILD” since January. I keep deducting the amount of 30.75 from my phone bill balance to no avail. I have conf numbers, names, times & dates of the times I’ve tried to get these people to do the right thing. Obviously, they are not going to. My next step is to call the FCC and see if I can get anything done there. What do you folks suggest? Jim
July 30th, 2009 at 4:53 am
They have been charging me for 2 months and I can’t get it cancelled and verizon can’t stop them from billing.
July 30th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
The charges for ‘myemaildefender’ showed up for the first time on my july phone bill. Called the company, they ‘say’ it will be removed. I asked the email address that was used to signup for the service…flakey and one we would never have used. This company definitely needs to be reported for running a scam.
August 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pm
I was charged by ‘MYEMAILDEFENDER’ on my July phone bill, and I’ve never heard of the company. I contacted the company right away to dispute the charges and we’ll have to wait and see if they disappear from my bill. I looked at the online form I supposedly used to sign up for their service, and they had my name, email, address, phone number correct but my DOB was incorrect as was the IP address used to sign up with. The IP address 168.230.246.63 which belong to the Fair Isaac Corporation in MN. The supervisor didn’t fight me on the charges since all the information didn’t check out, of course I’ll have to see if they actually credit the charges back. Seems like some pretty deceitful business practices by this company.
August 5th, 2009 at 12:16 am
Rob, you’re lucky. All I got from myemaildefender was the note to cancel and the supervisor telling that the letter of authorization was sent to the same email address but did not come through. HA! Maybe I’m just a moron but I checked my IP address as well and she told me that was mine and I told her no. She then asked me for my IP addy and I said, no way! I did fall off a turnip truck but not on my head. Good luck getting a refund. Another outfit called ILD won’t reimburse AT&T so to keep my phone service I had to pay it. Those charges are almost a year old. It pays to be very careful on the net. Jimbo
August 5th, 2009 at 1:54 am
I turned them into the BBB. The BBB sent me a copy of a letter that was sent from myemaildefender saying they would be issuing a refund to my phone bill. I will see if it appears next week. I am not stopping until I get it. If it doesn’t show on my bill by Wednesday I will be contacting the BBB again. I’m not letting this go. Its bull and they should not be allowed to get away with it. Please turn them into the BBB.
August 9th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
I sick and tired of being sick and tired of these folks who think they can take our money at anytime they want to. And that includes the government!!! Good going Molly about the BBB. I’ve tried in our town but only get a recording. I wonder if there is a national number?? If any one knows please send it along. Thanks….Jim

I discovered 2 months worth of charges (July and Aug 2009) on my verizon telephne bill last night. Talking to the customer service rep and then a so-called manager was like something out of a George Orwell novel. I never signed up for the service and the name and emai address of the person who supposedly did didn’t match my name or email. Two months ago I was billed for a long distance service I never signed up for. That company dropped it, but given that these scams seem to be a repeat performance under different names, I’m wondering if I should change my telephone number. Does anyone know if that will help?
August 14th, 2009 at 1:01 am
I just discovered a charge on my phone bill from Enhanced Services Billing, Inc c/o MYEMAILDEFENDER, INC for $13.82 for something I never signed up for. I called to speak with a representative and was told, after being placed on hold for 15+ minutes, that in order to have the charge credited I would have to provide them with my email address so that they can send me a copy of the application that was supposedly completed online.
The representative confirmed that the application was completed online by someone named Damon, clearly not me or anyone in my household, but I would still need to review the application and verify the information with some supervisor who I would have to contact after this so called application has been emailed to me. She kept telling me it was company policy. ARE YOU KIDDING ME???!!! I told her I was not going through those hoops when she’s already told me that my name is not the one on the application. I told her I would call back when a supervisor would be available to speak to me since she clearly was not able to assist me with my credit. My question is how it it that my phone company allows billing from these random companies without verifying the information with the customer first. I will keep you all posted!!
August 22nd, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Well, Rhonda, if it’s of any help, I kept writting to AT&T some pretty bad letters for me but it finally paid off. There were over $42 worth of charges from 2 different “scams” like myemaildefender. I finnaly got nasty enough that AT&T agreed to credit my account as in RIGHT NOW! I was thrilled. What you must all understand is you must not give up on these criminals. You’ve got to stay on them and the phone company. Thanks….Jim
August 24th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Well, needless to say, I still did not receive my credit from these people. I just contacted my phone company and the rep said she would place a block on my account so that this does not occur in the future. She also credited back the charge of $13.82! FINALLY!!!!!
August 24th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Hey Flks, Just a short note to congratulate Rhonda. In addition to watching your phone bill, watch all of your credit card statements every month. Do not grow weary in doing this for yourself. Some charges will appear to be legit but are they? Don’t be afraid to call the toll free number that should appear by the questioned charge. It could save you some money….Jimbo
August 25th, 2009 at 1:07 am
I complained to Verizon. they said they would take the charges off and send them back to the company that billed them. the Verizon said the only sort of block they can legally put agianst an unauthorized switch in the lng distance carrier. The other types of 3rd party billing they can’t block due to federal laws, but if you contact the phone company and dispute the charge they can send it back to the company. I also took the drastic measure to cancel my old phone number and got a new unlisted one. Given that the old number was being used like a credit card account, I figured cancelling the number might hel to avoid repeat performances. I was billed by 2 different companies in the last 3 months, so canceling the number and replacing with an unlisted number seemed a viable option. We’ll see.
August 26th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Iwas charged 15.41 on my verizon phone bill for my email defender.I have no idea what this companyu is and did not authorize any service from them. I think it is a disgrace that verizon alloes an outside company to make a charge on their bills without authorization. Should this continue I will change my phone company.
August 28th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Well after waiting for the refund, it finally showed up on my phone bill this month. The BBB got my money back. Don’t stop fighting for it everyone. Be sure and turn them in, I did it online, and the BBB took care of it.
September 6th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
We received a card in the email saying I had signed up for this service I had never heard of before an did not sign up for, and it said I would be billed on my phone bill. We figured it was a ploy to get us to sign up, so we waited, and sure enough this new “service” appeared on my phone statement this month. We are on ATT for land, cell and internet. I think I’ll look up the BBB online as Molly did.
September 13th, 2009 at 1:05 am
I just got a fair point bill with a $13.82 charge from my email defender, i called the number on the bill and canceled it, they said i would have to pay this bill even though it was unauthorized and put a block for further charges, they said they could email me the application information if i gave them my email address, hesitantly i did and they emailed me the application info used, it was my sons nick name and email address, my home address and phone number with an incorrect birth date, he does not even live with me and never signed up for this. On the same bill i was charged $9.10 by another internet service called e secure services and i also called them and canceled, they had my daughters name, i was so mad at this point that i did not ask about the email address and birth date used on this application but will definitely call back tomorrow during business hours and get the additional information used. I suspect My Space may be where they are getting some information. I can not figure out how my home address and telephone number is being associated with my grown kids email addresses. I am also calling Fair Point tomorrow because this is a total scam. How are they getting so much personal information?
September 17th, 2009 at 12:57 am
Just got my phone bill and wondered why it was so high. I scrolled down and saw a charge from myemaildefender for a total of $13.82. Called them to complain that we did not sign up for this and they say they can’t reverse the charge. I also canceled any future charges. Filed a complaint with AT&T and BBB. We did not sign up for this and they should not be allowed to “trick” people into signing up for their services.
September 19th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
I just filed with BBB about this company. My phone bill had two months of charges, they (myemaildefender) reluctantly stoped charges for October but stated I will not be refunded for August and September. This is such a scam, I never signed up for this nor do I even remember every having my phone bill as a “charge/Debit” for services. AT&T should not allow this company to do this. It’s not good business practice if so many people are complaining. I will not quit until I get a refund. This is not right.
Myemaildefender is a SCAM!
September 23rd, 2009 at 2:01 am
I filed a complain with http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx about this company. I was charged by MYEMAILDEFENDER on my Sep 09 phone bill, and Ive never heard of the company. I contacted the company right away to dispute the charges and they are NOT ready to credit back the amount. They say that it’s against their company policy. Although they have cancelled the subscription. AT&T should not allow this company to charge to their bill.
October 1st, 2009 at 1:20 am
Well, I finally got ATT to listen to me by writing them everyday for a while and complaining about their inability to remove those 3rd party charges. Not only did they refund my money from emaildefender and voicemal enhancer, they went all the way back to January of this year and picked up charges I had missed. Needless to say, I’m happy. The only thing I regret is that so may of us have been told ATT can’t do anything about it. If you stay on them and we all threaten to take our business elswhere, they seem to listen. Good luck to every one on these scams operated by common criminals. Jim
October 1st, 2009 at 3:01 am
Keep turning them in to the BBB. It might take some time but you will get a refund. Even if it’s only for one month, please turn them in. They should not be able to get away with this. This is theft, and its bs.
October 1st, 2009 at 1:24 pm
I received a bill for $13.77 from My Email Defenders. NEVER HEARD of this company. The bill says “Standard Services” and lists my home phone number. This has nothing to do with my home phone. The note says “These calls were made using my email defencers network. They will not be on your local telephone bill. Please pay upon receipt. I will call them on Monday.. I want to know what date and what number call was made to whom for how many minutes at what time? I very rarely use my home phone number. This MUST be wrong. I will not pay it because I did not request any services except my AT&T bill. They told me nothing about this company. I think it is a scam and I will get to the bottom of this… I will need proof!
October 10th, 2009 at 6:43 am
Myemaildefender is a TOTAL SCAM. I too saw a charge on my bill I hadn’t noticed before. I thought my bill had been higher in recent months but I hadn’t had time to investigate, and bills have a tendency to fluctuate from time to time, so I didn’t think too much of it until now, when I’m unemployed and needing to scrutinize my bills more. I was finally able to get AT&T to reverse all charges, so please, do be persistent. If they can bill you, they can refund your money. I still have to contact My Email BSers to get them to stop billing me, but at least I’ll get my money back on my bill. This scam has to stop.
October 15th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
WAS CHARGED I NEVER HEARD OF THIS BEFORE, TILL SAW MY PHONE BILL
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I have autobill pay on my phone bill and due to my schedule i do not readily look at my phone bill on a regular basis. well i did today and i noticed the myemaildefender charge on it. i asked them to send me an LOA. I listed my nickname John as the person that requested the service my home address and an IP address…however the ip address is located in Los Gatos CA where i have never personally visited and my birthday on the LOA application is not even my own. I have spoken with an operator Sara 1080 and requested to speak to a supervisor…however they were all conveniently in a meeting and she was not authorized to twll me the name of the supervisor that will supposedly call me back today.
October 23rd, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Found out I have been charged by “Myemaildefender.com” for 3 months at $13.82 for a service I never authorized…when I contacted the company I got infor for another person listed in my town and a IP address out of plano texas using my phone number! FTC and Attorney General Complaint submitted
October 29th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
Good info here, thanks. Better be real patient reaching these people at Myemaildefender because they really have no vested interest in answering the phone.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
It’s called Cramming – mystery phone charges for services you never ordered. Most of these scams occur thru the use of an 800 number. Others are initiated by contests or sweepstakes you may have entered. They are all deceptive, and you need to dispute the charges. Best way to deal with these crooks is 1) call the 800 number associated with this service and have this disconnected and get a rebate for all charges. If this does not work contact your states Attorney General’s office and the Federal Trade Commission, they have divisions that deal with consumer protection issues. Some will ignore your call, be persistent, the people working there get credit for every number they churn.
December 10th, 2009 at 8:07 am
I called At&T to take off these fraudulent charges and they can only take off the last 2 months. Any suggestions on how to reclaim the rest? Is this company still actively charging new people?
February 1st, 2010 at 3:37 pm
I just got my phone charges this month and was wondering why it was unusually high. Basically, I’ve gone through the same ordeal – fake name, e-mail address, birthdate, etc. I spoke to the company with no avail. In a nutshell the guy was so peeved that I had rattled his cage that he told me that there was nothing I could do but pay the charge and referred me back to the person who transferred me to him in the first place! WHAT?! I’ll follow the advice I’ve found here and report the charges to the BBB, FTC and my phone company.
February 22nd, 2010 at 9:01 pm
I notice AT&T seems to be the common thread here, I too have AT&T as a carrier. Just noticed this today so have no idea what will happen when I complain tomorrow but believe me I will. I have no freaking clue what this is and I am pissed.
March 14th, 2010 at 12:50 am
I just opened my phone bill and saw a 14.65 from this company. I called and they will stop the charges but will not refund my $14.65! I just spent a very frustrating 15 minutes on the phone and got no where! So they get to take money from all of us. Isn’t thata called stealing?? Attorney General anyone??
March 29th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
Just like most of the other complaints when opening our AT&T phone bill we noticed a charge for myemaildefender for $14.93. I call myemaildefender to have the charged removed and they go into “..ok we have canceled your service but you will still see a charge on next months statement but there will also be a credit for the same amount.” It was obvious what she was doing so I added “and you will remove the fradulent charge as well, right?”. She follows with “no, you signed up for the service and we cannot remove the previous charge but we have cancelled it going forward.” The funny thing is that the email address and name was my wife’s which is nowhere on our account and she is not an authorized user either. After going around and round and getting nowhere I finally got of the phone. My next step was to call AT&T. To my great suprise they removed the charge from my account and I also requested a block to be added so this could not happen again. It was painless once I got to AT&T (almost like they have dealt with this before because they asked little to no questions). I do not see how this can happen. A company can just send you a bill for something you have never heard of and of course never used and refuse to remove the charges. I normally let things slide but Im outraged to the point of physically shaking due to this. If there is ever a lawsuit, petition or anything against this company I will definately be a part of it.
March 31st, 2010 at 5:52 pm
I have had a similar experience. I discovered the additional charges for myemaildefender, Inc. I did not order. The “application” that AT&T had a very wrong birth date and after much heated discussion, AT&T took the charge off my home phone bill and blocked the company. It is appalling that an internet scam like this could be so easily perpetrated and so much money siphoned from so many. Some people do not check there bills as closely as I do. How can this company get a large corporation such as AT&T allow these kinds of charges??? Why is it still happening?
April 8th, 2010 at 7:19 pm
I received my bill with charges from myemaildefender. They sent me a copy of the original request. The person used my phone number with their name and address to get this service. Myemaildefender makes it too easy to sign up for by just using anyone’s phone number and not verifying other information. The person who committed this fraud is Yordanka Cuevas in Grandville Michigan.
April 16th, 2010 at 10:21 am
Just received my ATT bill has $13.82 charge. I have NO IDEA what this is. This is insanity. On hold forever with their number. Now Im going to ATT.
April 30th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
just noticed my ATT bill has 13.82 charge and 14.95 that i even know about,do not remember i did sign for those charges, called the company and cancel and put a block on it,this is terrible getting charged with out knowing it ,
May 6th, 2010 at 10:53 am
I received charge of $14.82 on my April telephone bill from these people…called them and they said they would not remove the charge & sent me a POA which I reviewed and disputed…had AT&T remove charge and block company..and told them I am not going to pay and will advertize my anger at them..will wait to see what else happens
May 15th, 2010 at 4:22 pm
I don’t usually read my bills but because I’m moving to a new house I browsed my new staement and found MYEMAILDEFENDER charges 14.65 I called AT and T and can’t do anythinf about it.
June 1st, 2010 at 5:25 pm
I called them and told me a person named NICOLE BAILEY applied for the email defender who I don’t even know…they won’t return my money which unfortunately since Feb. AT and T can’t even help.
June 1st, 2010 at 5:37 pm
My telephone provider August 3, 2010 alerted me that I have been billed for the last three months by My Email Defender. When I called the them I spoke to Denise, she said I ordered this back in November 2009. I said I did not, absolutely not. Why have you just began billing if I ordering this November 2009. There, was no response and she said they would credit me for the payments they deducted from my account. It’s frightening when a company can scurry their way into your pocket by any means necessary!
August 3rd, 2010 at 10:11 am
assorted bogus charges on my at&t bill monthly. at& t says they are no responsible for what they bill me for…..i just contacted the state attorney gerneral
August 22nd, 2010 at 12:15 pm
This happened to me too! The last name they have and address are very old. They also have the wrong the birthdate. I never signed up for this. I have been charged for 6 months. I just realized this and cancelled. I am now trying to get my almost $90 I paid for nothing back.
September 30th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
I called AT&T today and they sent all my charges back to myemaildefender (and to another scam company called cybertubetv) for current and past charges to my home phone billing account, and blocked them from it. They gave me credit for all that scam money for my future phone bills! They said I should call myemaildefender to cancel my account with them (which I did), and that it might happen that I am still billed for November because of the billing cycle (which myemaildefender says it won’t happen). If it does happen that I am billed for November, I should call AT&T and they will send the charges back once again. They also said that usually those scam companies don’t try to charge you personally when they get the charges back from AT&T. Let’s hope so. I must say that AT&T was quite helpful in this case!
November 5th, 2010 at 3:00 pm
I too am being charged on my phoe bill for something I did not order. I have contacted the Pa Consumer Protection Bureau
January 4th, 2011 at 11:46 am
Happen to me also, they used my nick name, which I don’t often use. Unbelievable that Verizon would allow these scam artist to use them. Whats next. I can’t believe a telephone company can bill you for something you didn’t give authorization for.
